Over the past few years, Excite has been approached by multiple organizations looking for eye drop services. From our perspective, there appeared to be a shortage of contract manufacturers providing eyedrop services or manufacturing services, so we made the decision to step into that gap and fill a need with our experience and expertise. As we conducted our research, we found there had been a lot of novel formulations in recent years for eyedrops and eyedrop administration, and the demand was only going up for eyedrop products. In addition to this, we found the generic market demand is growing.
There are a number of reasons for this increased interest in eyedrops, but the unique service proposition is fairly straightforward – eyedrop delivery is easy to administer. You’re not asking the patient to take an injection or even swallow a pill. You’re simply putting a drop in your eye. Most people are familiar with eyedrops from their experience with contacts or as a treatment for dry eyes. The administration of an eye drop feels pretty common to most of us.
Our site is one of the most valuable natural assets humans take for granted – until the integrity of that asset is thrown into question. There are a number of drugs on the market that have risen to meet the concerns about these issues over the years, as preserving their sense of sight becomes a top priority for those suffering from any eye disease. Allergies and general infections to degenerative diseases, there are many products out there on the market to help treat them. The availability and ease of use is making the prospect of introducing eyedrop delivery is becoming more and more prominent.
Implementing these services has come with a lot of time and effort, as eyedrops are aseptic (or sterile) and they have to be manufactured as such, using the practices and guidelines for aseptic manufacturing. Excite purchased the facility that was suited best for these new processes and equipment, then we completely re-finished it, putting several sterile-qualified rooms. We met with specialist fabricators and manufacturers to customize the equipment necessary, then we worked around the clock with metrology to install each piece precisely as designed. With all that in place, we have had the IQ and OQ performed, so that all that’s left now is the performance qualification. It is safe to say that – pound for pound – Excite Pharma has one of the most state-of-the-art facilities for eyedrop manufacturing. This has been roughly a two-year journey.
